Here’s my story. I moved to Canada from Japan when I was six. I’ve attended grades 1-12 and started university in the great land of Ontario (just like you!!). However, I’ve been paying just below $10,000 a year in tuition as an international student for elementary school and high school and now I’m paying over $15,000 for university. After being here for over two-thirds of my life, I’ve become pretty much inept at my first language (Japanese). Hence, I would be an utter failure if placed back into Japanese society. Now, the ideal situation for me is to apply for Permanent Residence and then Citizenship. However, due to immigration regulations, I am unable to apply for Permanent Resident status because I do not have a year of job experience in any of these occupations:
* Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or
* Skill Level A (professional occupations) or
* Skill Level B (technical occupations and skilled trades)
Here’s the kicker. These types of occupations all require higher schooling of some degree. Three more years for me. $$$?
Most likely I am better at Canadian geography than you. (Population of Vancouver? Why, 580,000 and 2.1 million metro of course!)
I join political organizations at my university to promote my preferred political parties because legally, I am not allowed to vote. I find that it’s my own way of indirectly “voting”. I get more excited about an election than most of my friends, and when I see a wasted vote, I cry.
I volunteer, I am a good citizen.
Recently, I was fired from a job because it was funded by Service Canada for Citizens, Permanent Residents, and Refugees and my boss forgot to tell me until I started. Thanks for ruining my life, Immigration Canada!
I made this post to laugh at the ludicrousness of my situation. Welcome to my de facto stateless life.
Peace and love (floating along),
Davey

Satire.
I feel for you. After spending most of your life there you should really be considered legally Canadian. It must be a horrible situation to be in but I’m sure you’ll find a way out of it. Marriage perhaps?
